School vaccines: Learn what’s available in your province
Through our Education and Practice Change work, we help healthcare professionals and healthcare organizations test and implement new models of care and practice change supports.
We provide tailored education products including virtual simulation games, town hall presentations and practice change resources on important and emerging health topics.
We also investigate provider perceptions on various health topics, develop partnerships with key health leaders and organizations and develop and implement health communication campaigns to drive positive health behavior change.
In March 2024, we launched an educational whiteboard animation video aimed at raising awareness about the links between oropharyngeal cancer and HPV.
The video was scripted, directed and animated by our team to present HPV information in an accessible and engaging format. In addition, resources for both dental practitioners and patients were also developed.
We presented this work at the Pacific Dental Conference, engaging with over 10,000 dental professionals in vital conversations about HPV vaccination and oropharyngeal cancer.
Leveraging previous employer engagement work, we have developed an online resource hub which will serve as a one-stop shop for employers, employees and benefits advisors to access key information about vaccination in the workplace.
This online hub includes a private payer report-card on vaccine coverage from the top insurance providers in Canada as well as valuable information to support vaccination awareness building within the workplace. Furthermore, this hub builds awareness with key stakeholders around the ROI of supporting workplace vaccination programs.
We will be engaging Canadian employers over 2025 to better understand their information needs around vaccination and other health prevention topics to further develop this online resource.
We are currently partnering with multiple private and public sector funders to support a national primary care quality improvement collaborative, focused on building capacity in primary care teams to support enhanced cancer screening and prevention practices.
Through this work, we will be identifying and training primary care change agents that will work with their teams to identify eligible patients for lung cancer screening interventions.
Utilizing a team based care approach, participating primary care teams will learn how to best leverage their EMR’s and multi-disciplinary team members to support their patients to receive enhanced screening and prevention care.
In anticipation of the increasing access to and national recommendations for RSV immunization for infants in Canada, we partnered with Sanofi, Dr. Cora Constantinescu, Dr. Ian Mitchell and the team from the Calgary RSV clinic to develop a provider focused virtual simulation game (VSG).
This VSG was designed to support pre- and post-natal providers hold effective conversations about infant RSV immunization and how it can support patients to reduce the risks related with RSV infections in newborns and infants.
The education game supports these providers to hold effective conversations and manage common misconceptions about the new monoclonal antibody passive immunization product and how it can keep infants safe from RSV infection.
Point of care testing for respiratory illnesses within a primary care clinic can be a helpful tool to confirm a diagnosis and create an appropriate treatment plan before a patient leaves the clinic.
Working alongside two primary care practices in Alberta, we developed and tested a point of care testing clinical process. This project utilized assays and an analyzer device provided by our partner Becton Dickinson to support testing of patients who presented with symptoms related to COVID-19, Influenza, Strep A or RSV related infections.
This project helped to identify and develop best practices and tools for implementing point of care testing into primary care team workflows to support both patients and providers with optimizing their primary care visit.
We received a grant from the Public Health Agency of Canada to expand on previous work done to develop vaccine communication training and tools for healthcare providers. Working with Dr. Cora Constantinescu and others, we expanded on the previous virtual simulation games supporting provider conversations around vaccination for special populations including pregnant persons and immunocompromised patients.
This project also developed and launched an online Vaccine Confidence Toolkit, hosted by the University of Calgary, as well as tools to support providers with measuring the impact of their vaccine conversations.
Organizations can play a pivotal role in promoting workplace health and wellness including creating awareness of and facilitating access to vaccination. We worked with partners from Moderna to develop and disseminate an online employer handbook to support employer efforts to keep their workforce safe and healthy.
This handbook provided them with key vaccine information and supported administration of on-site vaccination clinics.
This project was funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Immunization Partnership Fund, in collaboration with Dr. Sandra Davidson and Dr. Cora Constantinescu from the University of Calgary.
The purpose of this project was to develop, validate and disseminate an educational program for healthcare provider trainees to prepare them for their future roles in vaccine advocacy, delivery and promotion.
The program aimed to support COVID-19 vaccine consultation including how to address issues barriers leading to vaccine hesitancy and is targeted at a range of providers including medicine, nursing and pharmacy.
This project was funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Immunization Partnership Fund in collaboration with Dr. Noah Ivers from Women’s College Hospital.
The purpose of the project was to implement a national capacity building and education initiative reaching non-physician health care practitioners and other essential workers in long-term care facilities and homecare settings.
This project provided health care professionals with tools, training and evidence-based information to build vaccine awareness, increase their willingness to get vaccinated, and support them to become advocates and educators in their daily interactions at work and home.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we facilitated a bi-weekly working group that brought together subject matter experts, public health professionals, physicians, pharmacists, and nurses to discuss relevant topics related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through this work, we put forth strategies and action plans for how to educate and drive awareness amongst both healthcare professionals and the public.
This working group was supported by a team of volunteers and creatives who developed tailored educational resources based on the topics discussed during the working group.
